MELBOURNE, Fla. — The neon-like lights of the new control tower at Orlando Melbourne International Airport will be illuminated for the first time tonight as part of a runway 5K run — but if you want to see them, be sure you're on time.

The lighting of the new air traffic control tower will happen at 8:30 p.m. Thursday and won't last long, because the lights are distracting to the controllers working in the old tower nearby, the airport said in a news release.

The lights are shaped in the appearance of a sail, a nod to Melbourne's "Harbor City" slogan.

About 2,500 runners are expected for the Corporate 5K run at the airport.

Florida Power & Light will provide a 6-foot light switch for the lighting ceremony.
