Senators Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson are hosting a National School Safety forum in Washington on Wednesday.

  • Rubio, Nelson hosting National School Safety forum
  • Parkland shooting families, gov. officials, experts to discuss prevention
  • Senators working to keep school safety conversation going

They'll be hosting families impacted by the Parkland shooting, government officials, and experts to share ideas on how to prevent school shootings from happening again.

Both of the Florida Senators are working to keep the conversation going since the shooting at a high school in Parkland two months ago.

Rubio and Nelson will lead and moderate a discussion today about school safety on Capitol Hill.

The father of a Parkland shooting victim will make brief opening remarks.

The Senators are likely to talk about what they have been doing on Capitol Hill to address school safety.

Recently, Congress passed legislation that will put more resources toward improving school security and putting preventative measures in place, like tip lines and metal detectors, however, the legislation did not address gun laws.

The bipartisan duo also introduced a bill a little less than a month ago that would encourage states to adopt so-called red flag laws--which give police authority to seize guns from people who pose a threat to themselves or others.

Gun related proposals on Capitol Hill have not gained traction. The only consensus seems to be on school safety, without curbs to guns, and in a midterm election year, gun safety proposals face a difficult if not impossible future.
