HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla — Hundreds of students, family and faculty at Durant High School gathered at the school's football field Wednesday evening to honor the life of Grover Wills.

Details surrounding Wills's death on April 15 were not mentioned at the vigil in his honor. Rather, those in attendance said only that he was loved and would be missed.

His teammates from the school's football team crossed the field as they always do for games, only this time it was to give flowers and hugs to Wills’s grieving family.

And just as Wills and his team packed the stands with fans at their games, fans and friends came out in large numbers to honor his life in song and memories.

“I want you to remember the good times you had him and think of the joy it would bring to you because we want to celebrate his life and not his passing,” said one friend.

“Grover touched my life that I cannot express with words," said another, with tears in his eyes. "I will miss you so much, Grover. I love you and I look forward to seeing that beautiful smile again. Fly high number five."

The school's football coach said he plans to retire Wills's jersey and put it on display. The high school senior was set to graduate this year.

Investigation continues

Hillsborough County detectives, meanwhile, say Wills went to meet a man at a gas station for a drug deal the night he died, and a fight broke out between them. Wills was shot and later died at a local hospital.

Investigators sad the man who shot Wills originally left the shooting scene, but returned with his attorney. So far he has not been charged, but authorities say this investigation is far from over.
