TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran is backing Adam Putnam in the upcoming governor's race.

  • Adam Putnam gets Corcoran backing in governor's race primary
  • Putnam is state's current Commissioner of Agriculture
  • Putnam and Ron DeSantis are top GOP candidates

Corcoran announced the move Wednesday in Tallahassee.

Corcoran, who had harbored his own gubernatorial run, had seen his fundraising flatline in recent weeks and little traction in GOP primary polls.

The Florida Commissioner of Agriculture, Putnam looks to be a primary front-runner with U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, already endorsed by President Donald Trump.

In a statement this week, the Florida Democratic Party said the endorsement is "the latest sign that Putnam is rapidly moving to the right and aggressively competing with DeSantis for the support of the Trumpian base."

Election Day is November 6.
