ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A former St. Petersburg mayor has died.

  • Don Jones was St. Petersburg mayor from 1967-69
  • He leaves behind wife, three children
  • Flags in front of City Hall will be flown at half-staff

Don Jones, who served as the city's mayor from 1967-69 and on the City Council from 1963-67, died with his wife of 71 years by his side. He was 92.

Current Mayor Rick Kriseman made the announcement Wednesday on his Facebook page.

"Don was a good man and a consequential and progressive mayor who made a positive impact on our city," Kriseman said. "He was a champion for equality, green space, and higher wages for city employees. He came down on the right side of history when sanitation workers protested unfair pay and will forever be remembered for his love of family and St. Pete."

Jones and his wife had three children, four granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.

Kriseman has directed that the flags in front of City Hall be flown at half-staff through the remainder of the week.
