LAKELAND, Fla. -- This Saturday, a group of Polk County middle schoolers will be aiming to gridiron glory for a second year in a row, but they won't be playing football.

Instead, the competition will involve their culinary skills.

The students from Lake Gibson Middle School will be competing in the annual "Gridiron Cooking Challenge" at One Buc Place in Tampa, hosted by Florida Dairy Farmers.

The team has some big shoes to fill -- the school won the competition last year with their recipe for Zoodle Noodle Squash.  This year, they're hoping their Quarterback Quesadillas with pineapple salsa are the winner.

The four-student team came up with the recipe during cooking class, and beat their other classmates in a competition at school. Now they’re competing against other teams from Sanford, Wesley Chapel and St. Cloud.

“I think our recipe is a winner because it has a lot of different flavors and layers, and different types of cheeses and it’s just really good together,” said Kelsey Slone, one of the team members.

The event is free and open to the public. The winning team will receive a prize pack for its school, valued at $2,500.
