Joan Sardinas has been serving customers at Publix with a smile for 24 years--and it hasn't gone unnoticed.

Her kindness is what keeps customers coming back. 

"I have quite a few that stand in line just for me," she said. "They all check to see how I am, ask me how I'm doing, and I ask them the same."

Sardinas and her customers usually have a lot to talk about, until she had to post a sign explaining her broken hearing aid. 

"I was born deaf and I started wearing hearing aids when you start school," Sardinas said. "The life span on the hearing aid is 5 years and my hearing aid is six years old. So it just crumbled."

A new hearing aid costs at least $5,000, which wasn't in Sardinas' budget. But thanks to her loyal customers, she'll be getting one anyway. 

Once her sign went up, word spread, and a Bay area doctor offered Sardinas a new hearing aid for free. 

"Overwhelmed, I feel love, you know? My heart is full. I'm just overwhelmed with the kindness people give me," she said. 

To Sardinas, they aren't just her customers, they're her family. 

"We are family. Seminole Heights, it's not just a community, it's a family," she said.
