TAMPA, Fla. -- A group of Tampa students turned reactions to recent school shootings into a song, as part of an assignment for class.

Titled “Save the Children,” the song discusses not only sorrow for the victims and their families, but it also offers possible perspective from a shooter’s point of view.

"The victims are absolutely a tragedy. But it's also a tragedy that some child felt like their only option was to shoot up a school," said Dr. Veronica Walters, head of Walters Academy for Entrepreneurship.

"People bullying them, them not having a lot of friends or something maybe even going on at home,” said 6th grader Essence Johnston on why a person might start down the path of violence.

The students say the assignment has them treating other students with more kindness.
