TAMPA, Fla. -- A woman charged with killing a tow truck driver on the Howard Frankland Bridge in 2016 has been sentenced to 28 years in prison.

Allison Faye Huffman learned her sentence Tuesday. The incident happened March 29, 2016.

According to Florida Highway Patrol troopers, Huffman was driving on the bridge before 5 a.m. when she struck and killed 43-year-old Rogelio Perez-Borroto, who was assisting a couple whose vehicle had broken down on the bridge.

After she hit Perez-Borroto, she kept driving, according to troopers. Her vehicle was found later that morning.

Huffman was 36 when the crash occurred.

The victim's sister, Zarias Perez-Borreto, spoke during Tuesday's sentencing.

"I can't nearly imagine what it's been for the past two years for you," she said to Huffman. "What must have been going through your head day and day out. My heart goes out to you, and I have mercy on you and truly hope that you can find the peace that you must need and to also forgive yourself."

Her 2012 Volkswagen Passat was found later that morning in the parking lot of the Crowne Plaza hotel near Westshore Mall.

FHP Sgt. Steve Gaskins said that after the hit-and-run, Huffman took a taxi from the hotel to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino using the alias "Beth."

Judge Vivian Corzo called Huffman's actions "reprehensible." In addition to the sentence, Huffman won't be allowed to drive again, according to the judge's ruling.

Huffman apologized to the family.

"I just want to say that I know there's no words that can give you any comfort, but I'm truly sorry from the bottom of my heart," she said.
