CENTRAL FLORIDA -- We’ve had a welcome sight across the peninsula today: The sun!

We can thank slightly drier air in our atmosphere for providing us a temporary reprieve from days of clouds and the off and on downpours.

As we’ve lowered rain chances, we have bumped up temperatures. Highs topped the mid to upper 80s with a very muggy feel to the air.

Thursday starts with a mix of clouds and sun, with afternoon shower and storm chances at 40 percent. Temps heat into the mid-80s to lower 90s across the area.

Low pressure developing in the Caribbean is still being monitored for potential tropical characteristics, and models vary greatly on an eventual path. If it develops more, it’ll likely head toward the Louisiana coast.

If the low remains more of a weak open wave, it could push over western Florida. In any case, we’re not at all worried about really high winds or severe weather this weekend.

Regardless of development though, we are forecasting locally heavy rain and minor flooding potential. A flood watch will likely take us through the holiday weekend.

An easing east-southeast trade swell and wave heights around knee to waist high will provide surfers poor to fair conditions in the waves.

We’ll keep a rideable surf heading into the upcoming holiday weekend, but by then will have to content with widespread, locally heavy rain on our beaches.

Get out to the coast Thursday if you can, and don’t forget the sunscreen.
