According to police, the officer was involved in a crash in his cruiser just before 10 p.m. at Rosery Road and Clearwater-Largo Road. Officials said the officer was conscious after the crash, in which the cruiser collided with another vehicle before hitting a light pole.

The officer was taken to Morton Plant Hospital for treatment and later released. His K9 was checked out at a local animal hospital.

Two people in the other car were taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg in stable condition.

Officials said the crash remains under investigation.

One witness said she heard an extremely loud boom and she ran outside to try and help.

"I was shocked, shocked, actually I was more shocked that people weren't more injured than they appeared," said Cindy Richards, who lives nearby the crash scene. "It was a tremendous loud thump and I thought someone had died."

Police said more information will be provided as it becomes available.
