  • Judd: Incident started as undercover child porn operation

The deputy's injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The shooting happened on 8th Street North in Dundee.

Sheriff Grady Judd said the incident started as an undercover child porn investigation. Two deputies -- Deputy Christine Smith, 41, and Deputy Trent Medley, 29, entered a home around 10 a.m. and spoke with Andres Estrada, 21, and his brother, Claudio, 18.

Judd said the two men were cooperating and that Andres Estrada allowed the deputies to look at his computer and cell phone. A child porn image was found on Andres Estrada's phone, Judd said.

At that point Medley reportedly told Smith to read Estrada his rights while he walked into another room to call his supervisor and fellow detectives. It was then, according to Judd, while Smith was reading Estrade his rights that Estrada lunged and attacked her.

Judd said Estrada, described as 6 feet tall and 220 pounds, outweighed Smith by about 100 pounds. He called the beating "vicious" and said she was hit in the head. He said Claudio Estrada tried to restrain his brother but wasn't successful.

Medley heard her screams, according to Judd, went back inside, saw that Estrada was trying to get her gun, and fired three shots that killed Estrada.

The female deputy was treated and released from a hospital.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office is now conducting five separate investigations in connection with this incident: a child pornography investigation, a death investigation, an autopsy by the medical examiner, an internal review of the shooting and a review by the State Attorney's Office.

Estrada had no criminal history, according to the Sheriff's Office. However, he had been Baker Acted three times previously, in March 2015, in May 2015, and in February 2016.
