HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY -- It's a big day for business for Mike Wilcox and his team with Shoot Straight. Their booth is one of the largest at the Florida Gun Show, which is spending the weekend at the Florida State Fairgrounds.

  • Florida Gun Show in Bay area this weekend
  • Purchasing age increased to 21
  • 5 day cooling off period

It's also the first major gun show in the area since the minimum age to purchase a firearm was upped to 21, and Hillsborough County enacted a five-day cooling off period for gun sales.

"We do a morning meeting before every show. We make sure that every employee, our whole staff, they know every regulation for what county we're in," Wilcox said.

The majority of sales at the gun show are going to those who already have concealed carry permits, or are licensed to have a firearm, so that cooling off people doesn't apply.

Wilcox says the longer cooling off period isn't usually a deal breaker for those wishing to purchase who haven't gone through the certification process.

"I don’t see it as that big of a deal at all. If you’re already waiting three days without a permit, what’s a couple more," Wilcox said.

However, for Patia Rodewald with Moms Demand Action, even small changes are a victory.

"I don't think it's enough, but it definitely will help," she said.

She says she's most concerned with background checks, and making sure that guns don't get into the wrong hands.

"For people with dangerous mental illnesses who have an impulse to buy a gun and start shooting and killing, the five day waiting period will help," she said.
