TOWN 'N' COUNTRY, FLA. -- The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a man whose body was found against the back of a Tampa grocery store.

  • Hillsborough deputies conducting death investigation
  • Body of man found behind Fresco Y Mas in Tampa
  • Deputies not calling it a homicide, but not ruling it out

The body was found overnight at Fresco Y Mas, the old Winn Dixie, located at the corner of Sheldon Road and Waters Avenue.

The sheriff's office said they received a call around 1 a.m. about the body. Deputies are not calling it a homicide at this time, but they're also not ruling it out.

"It's just a death investigation at this time. We haven't even determined the cause of death yet to confirm if it's suspicious. We're just calling it suspicious because it's not every day you find someone dead behind a grocery store," Danny Alvarez with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Early Saturday morning, investigators were seen digging through dumpsters and marking over two dozen pieces of evidence lying on the ground behind the supermarket and a nearby grassy area.

The forensics team has been trying to put together what happened, but they say they don't know much right now.

Investigators are still trying to identify the victim. They said it could be a couple of days before they release his name.

The grocery store is still set to open at 8 a.m.
