SPRING HILL, Fla. -- The children injured in an alcohol-related crash that killed their mother Sunday remained in the hospital Monday afternoon but were expected to be ok, according to a family member.

  • Crash occurred on U.S. 41 on Sunday morning
  • Shaita Guillory, 30, was youngest of 11 siblings
  • Driver, passenger in second vehicle remain hospitalized

Shaita Guillory, 30, was killed, and her children, Terrolyn Guillory, 9, and Leighton Guillory, 7, were hurt in a head-on crash on U.S. 41 Sunday morning.

"I honestly didn’t think that anybody lived through it," said Suzie Miller, who lives in front of the crash site. "I was totally shocked with how bad the cars were mangled that anybody at all lived through it."

Miller said she's lived along US-41 since 1965, and that she and her family call the road "accident alley" because of the frequent crashes.

Candeda Sasser lives in the nearby Tall Pines RV Park. She said her husband was doing yard work near the road when he witnessed the crash.

"He tried to do what he could for the family and the mother," Sasser said. "There was nothing he could do for her, other than let her know he was with her kids."

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Guillory was driving south on U.S. 41 when a Hyundai Accent drifted into her path and hit her car head-on. Alcohol was noted as a factor for the 26-year-old driver.

"It’s the most senseless thing in the world to do. You’re 26 years old. You’re not a kid — you had a choice," said Sasser.

The main concern among neighbors Monday was for Guillory's children.

"That family is going to be devastated for the rest of their lives, and those kids are going to grow up without a mother," said Miller.

"They can’t wake up and say, 'Mom, I love you,' again. All they can say is, 'Mom, I miss you,'" said Sasser.

Guillory's brother, Kelvin Atkinson, a state senator in Nevada, said his sister was an outgoing person who wanted to work in the fashion industry. He said she was the youngest of 11 children and that her siblings are devastated by her loss.

FHP Sgt. Steve Gaskins said the driver of the Hyundai and his 27-year-old passenger were also injured in the crash and were still in the hospital Monday afternoon. Gaskins said charges are pending.
