When news broke this week about the suicides of designer Kate Spade and CNN host Anthony Bourdain, Bay area mom Lisa Acierno was crushed.

"It's a sucker punch, there's no other way to say it," Acierno said. "It takes me back to March 28, 2017. I'm right back there as raw as can be."

That's when her 17-year-old daughter, Hailey, left home and took her own life. She would have graduated last month.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, suicide rates have risen by nearly 30 percent in the last two decades. According to federal reports, more than half of those who commit suicide have not been diagnosed with a mental health condition.

Shortly after Acierno's death, her mom launched her own non-profit to help.

It's called Hailey's Voice of Hope.

Each day, Acierno adds encouraging words online. She calls families who need support.

She said the best thing anyone can do to stop someone from hurting themselves is to be kind and speak up.

"That's the biggest thing, don't do nothing," Acierno said. "If you feel like there's a concern, definitely talk to whoever you need to talk to."

And while the headlines will soon change, Acierno said she remains committed in her fight to reverse a disturbing trend.

The first fundraiser for "Hailey's Voice of Hope" will be a golf tournament in October.

Part of the non-profit's mission is to develop educational programs that raise awareness and acceptance of mental illness.
