TAMPA, Fla. -- Gas prices have inched down since a spike during the Memorial Day Weekend but don't celebrate too soon.

  • Summer gas prices
  • Prices could fluctuate, pending an OPEC meeting this month
  • Gas tracker

Prices are down six cents a gallon in the past few weeks and could drop even more. The average price for a gallon of gas in Florida is $2.78 Tuesday, down seven cents.

But as drivers in Florida enjoy a price break, things could change quickly.

That comes down to an OPEC meeting taking place later this month. Russia and Saudi Arabia want to add more oil to the market. But if they aren't allowed to, gas prices could quickly rise.

Also, major airlines including American, Delta and United have announced higher airfares due to just the potential of increasing fuel costs.

That's why AAA is advising travelers to buy tickets now for trips later this year.

"Go ahead and book now while prices are lower," said Mark Jenkins with AAA. "Again, there is a lot of volatility in the market right now and you don't want to risk booking a month from now when oil prices could be much higher."

Jenkins also said travelers should budget more for gas for their summer road trips.
