TAMPA, Fla. -- Police in Tampa are trying to piece together what happened after a hit-and-run crash left a woman dead Sunday night.

  • Woman struck at North Nebraska, East Linebaugh avenues
  • Police collecting evidence, surveillance video from businesses
  • Investigators say vehicle that hit her was white

Investigators haven't determined whether the woman hit and killed at North Nebraska and East Linebaugh avenues was trying to cross the road or stepped out into traffic, Tampa Police Lt. Ricardo Ubinas said.

Another unknown is what kind of vehicle hit her. Police say it was a white vehicle but are not sure whether it was an SUV or car.

Police say only one witness has come forward, but law enforcement officials think others saw what happened and want to talk to them.

All through the night, detectives collected surveillance video from businesses in the area, trying to spot the vehicle before or after the crash.

They are looking to get a better description of the vehicle, maybe a license plate or even what direction the vehicle went after speeding away.

So far, police have not released the name of the woman hit and killed as they are still trying to contact that woman's family.
