PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. -- The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit is conducting free boat safety inspections Sunday.

  • Free boat safety inspections today
  • Checks held at Pinellas War Veteran's Memorial Park
  • Going on from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Deputies are checking for required vessel safety equipment--like the correct number of life jackets.

Boaters also need a personal flotation device for each passenger on board and it must be size appropriate. Other items they'll check for include throw cushions, flares, and fire extinguishers.

"You obviously want to have you safety equipment, know the weather conditions of that day and be familiar with the water ways of where you're going because the tides change," Pinellas County Deputy Ryan Dunning said.

Boats in compliance get a sticker. Deputies were out a Fort Desoto Park boat ramp on Saturday.

Deputies will check boats today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pinellas War Veteran's Memorial Park boat ramp.
