Tampa Fire Rescue responded Thursday afternoon to a fire that started on the roof of a Seminole Heights commercial building and spread to a nearby property.

  • No injuries reported
  • Fire initially deemed to be accidental
  • Tar kettle on roof caught fire

Crews responded to the fire at 3:04 p.m. Thursday at 701 W. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Tampa after receiving a 911 call from a worker working on that building's roof.

Roof work involving a propane-powered tar kettle was in use by crews on the site when the fire broke out. The tar kettle caught fire, according to investigators, and also ignited nearby leaves, which helped spread the fire to a wooden shed on the property to the west of the building.

The workers attempted to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher, but when the fire spread they called 911.

Tampa Fire Rescue says the fire was contained to the immediate area and put out within 15 minutes. No injuries were reported.

Investigators have initially deemed the fire accidental.
