  • 3-month-old in critical condition
  • Demarcus Johnson charged with aggravated child abuse

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office received a call around 6:45 a.m. Friday from Brandon Regional Hospital about a female child with multiple skull fractures and swelling on her brain.

Deputies determined the baby was in the care of Demarcus Johnson, 25, when she was injured. Johnson was watching the child while her mother was working overnight, deputies said. Johnson is the mother's live-in boyfriend but is not the father of the child.

Deputies said when the mother returned home from work around 4 a.m., she discovered the baby with head trauma and took her to the hospital.

The baby was transported to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg where she underwent emergency surgery. Officials say the baby is currently in critical condition.

Johnson was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse.
