RIVERVIEW, Fla. -- Hillsborough County deputies have charged a 16-year-old boy with no prior criminal history who they say vandalized 36 vehicles in Riverview last month.

Investigators said Monday that the teen is responsible for damaging the dozens of vehicles from 33 victims, including one vehicle that belongs to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said the teen is a local high school student who said he used his older-model BMW to commit the offenses.

Investigators said the boy drove through the South Core, South Fork and Summerfield subdivisions in the early hours of Monday, July 16, and vandalized cars that were parked in their driveways. Residents said they awoke that morning to find their cars with broken windows and scratched paint.

The total damage to the vehicles amounted to over $10,000.

The teen, who we are not identifying per our crime guidelines, faces charges of felony criminal mischief and misdemeanor criminal mischief and was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

The investigation is ongoing.
