HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. -- A Hillsborough County detention deputy has been charged with driving under the influence, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The incident happened at a McDonald's on 301 Highway South in Riverview early Saturday.

Jose Cruz, 31, was driving his 2011 Ford Ranger in the parking lot when he struck two poles.

Cruz then became stuck in on a cement median.

Deputies responded to the scene at about 3:30 a.m. and initiated a traffic stop.

Cruz was asked to participate in a field sobriety exercise, where "impairment was observed."

Cruz gave two breath samples resulting in a BAC of .189 and .196.

He was arrested and transported to Orient Road Jail.

Cruz, who has been with the sheriff's office for three years, has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
