HERNANDO BEACH, Fla. -- A Hernando County deputy crashed his patrol vehicle into a canal after swerving to avoid a deer in the road early Monday, the Sheriff's Office said.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Deputy David Merced had just left a call for service just after midnight and was traveling north on Shoal Line Road when he saw a deer in the roadway.

He swerved the patrol car to the left, left the roadway just north of Petit Road and crashed into the canal.

The car partially sank.

Emergency responders helped Merced out of the car. He was not hurt in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
