WIMAUMA, Fla. — Students at the Wimauma Boys and Girls Club are getting free backpacks from members of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office as they prepare to head back to school.

  • Backpack giveaway now in its third year
  • Backpacks stuffed with school supplies
  • Many students from low-income homes, migrant families

“I appreciate that the cops came and gave us backpacks,” said 4th grader Jose Rodriguez.

The backpacks were stuffed with much-needed school supplies.

Most of the children are from low income homes, and many come from migrant farming families.

Harece Carrie was one of the lucky backpack recipients. The fourth grader says he wants to be a police officer, and said this event inspired him to hopefully pay it forward someday.

“I'll give backpacks to other kids, too,” he said.

This is the third year the sheriff’s office has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club for the backpack giveaway.

“These children belong to some of the hardest working families in the county, and they just need a helping hand,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “There's nothing more rewarding as a sheriff's office to be able to come in and make sure these kids are prepared for the upcoming school year.”

The kids also got free haircuts and food during the back-to-school event.
