ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- We didn’t have as many storms across the region Wednesday due to drier air and Saharan dust making it into our atmosphere.

  • Saharan dust in the air
  • Onshore breeze
  • Storms move east

This Saharan dust is what we talk about in our tropical update that comes off the coast of Africa and can help inhibit tropical storms in the Atlantic. If the dust is thick enough it can make it all the way to the U.S.

That’s what has happened so you might notice it looking a little more hazy for a couple days.

The bulk of the scattered storms have been in Polk County due to a wind from the west pushing the storms inland.

Thursday morning will start mostly clear with lows in the mid to upper 70s. A few showers will form in coastal regions during the first half of the day, but with an onshore wind from the west, they will move east quickly resulting in the best coverage of scattered storms going inland east of I-75 in the afternoon to evening.

The coverage of storms will only be at about 20 percent.

Highs will be near 90 at the coast, but mid-90s inland.

We will have an onshore wind again Friday, but slightly more moisture, so the coverage of storms will go back up to 30 percent. Any storms that form will move from coastal regions to inland areas.
