FLORIDA -- As red tide continues to cause concern for people wanting to vacation in Florida, the Better Business Bureau is offering some advice for those who are undecided if they should cancel their reservations.

  • Tips on vacationing in Florida during red tide
  • BBB receiving consumer complaints against businesses
  • How to handle rental cancellations
  • Red Tide report status

The organization has received an increase in complaints filed against businesses offering vacation rentals and services in relation to the presence of red tide. Consumers say they are having issues with businesses not disclosing potential red tide issues and not receiving refunds after canceling their booked rooms.

BBB says as a consumer, it is important to know your rights, but that begins with understanding the terms and conditions of your contract for a vacation rental or the refund policy for a hotel reservation. According to BBB, establishments are not required under Florida law to issue refunds for prepaid reservations.

Consumers should talk with the management of the business if they experience issues with canceling. The organization says most businesses want to keep their customers and will work with them to find a reasonable solution.
