LUTZ, Fla. — Hillsborough County deputies were forced to remove a man from a Lutz home early Tuesday after they said he stabbed his mother and then himself.

  • Stabbing, standoff early Tuesday at Lutz home
  • Woman hospitalized; man initially barricaded himself in home
  • Man eventually brought out with stab wounds to his neck

According to the sheriff's office, Serkan Ceylani, 41, stabbed his mother several times with a screwdriver around 1 a.m. at a home in the 19300 block of Garden Quilt Circle in Lutz.

Deputies initially responded to a call at the home about a suicidal person.

After arriving, they found the woman stabbed and Ceylani barricaded inside a bathroom in the home.

The woman, Hulya Ceylani, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and other family members were removed from the home. A SWAT team was called in and four neighboring homes were evacuated. She is in stable condition.

Officials tried to negotiate with Ceylani but eventually he stopped communicating.

Authorities broke into the bathroom through a window and deployed two cannisters of tear gas before confronting Ceylani. Once inside, deputies said Ceylani continued to be uncooperative. Deputies then shot him with a Taser, officials said.

Deputies said Serkan Ceylani suffered self-inflicted stab wounds to his neck. He was taken to an area hospital.

Authorities said an investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
