PALM HARBOR, Fla. -- An erratic driver was killed Tuesday evening after he crashed into several things on Curlew Road in Palm Harbor, officials said.

  • Erratic driver killed in crash
  • Victim identified as Austin Marr
  • Marr hit a light pole, utility box, traffic sign, and tree

The crash occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday in front of 1750 Curlew Road.

Austin Marr, 22, was driving his 2014 Volkswagon GTI westbound on Curlew Road when an off-duty officer drove past Marr, saying Marr appeared to be slowing or stopping along the curb lane of Curlew just west of Belcher Road.

Before Deputy Derrick Gregory could safely turn around to check on Marr, officials say he "abruptly accelerated westbound on Curlew Road at a high rate of speed turning left in a south direction across all lanes of traffic."

The Volkswagon then struck a light pole, a utility box, and a traffic sign which caused the vehicle to become airborne and hit a large oak tree.

Deputies say Marr had to be extricated from the vehicle. He was then transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators are still trying to determine was caused the erratic driving that led to the crash.
