TAMPA, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol has charged a woman with DUI after a crash Thursday night in which her vehicle went airborne, and its roof was ripped off.

  • Kelly Blackmon, 48, charged with DUI
  • FHP: Mazda hits curb, goes airborne, overturns
  • Pedestrian railing ripped of vehicle's roof

The crash occurred just before 7:30 p.m. in Tampa.

Troopers said Kelly Blackmon, 48, was speeding in the southbound lane of State Road 583, also known as N 56th Street, just north of the driveway access to 6302 N 56th St.

Blackmon's Mazda veered off the roadway and sideswiped the railing before striking a curb. Because of the vehicle's high speed, the crash caused the vehicle to go airborne over the driveway access and overturn, hitting a pedestrian railing with its roof.

According to the report, the roof tore off and wrapped around the railing, along with the driver's side door and the back passenger door being ripped from the body of the vehicle.

After hitting the railing, the Mazda overturned again, landing upright in a 20-foot-deep ditch.

Blackmon was injured and transported to Tampa General Hospital. She was charged with DUI and careless driving.
