Gov. Rick Scott is urging Floridians to be prepared as Hurricane Florence threatens the East Coast.

Scott issued a statement Sunday after a briefing with the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

"With Florence strengthening into a hurricane this morning and continuing to move east, Florida families need to remain alert and remember that storms like this can change course at any moment," Scott said in a statement.

Florence became a Category 1 hurricane Sunday. The storm is expected to become a major hurricane as soon as Monday evening.

Currently, Florida is not under any hurricane or tropical storm warnings.
