RUSKIN, Fla. -- A vehicle struck and killed a horse early Wednesday morning, causing a three-car crash and shutting down parts of US Highway 41 in Ruskin for several hours.

Two horses escaped from Sun city Stables, Hillsborough County deputies said, and were attempting to cross US 41 when one of the horses was hit by a Toyota Camry.

The crash occurred just north of Old US Highway 41A around 6:17 a.m.

After the first impact, the horse was hit by two more vehicles and died at the scene. 

The driver of the Camry was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

The second driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to St. Joes South. 

The third driver was not injured in the crash. 

Deputies say no charges are pending.
