TAMPA, Fla. — A Tampa mother fighting to get her son back to the United States after the boy was taken to Lebanon by his father will soon meet with Florida's two sitting senators in the nation's capitol.

Rachelle Smith is a mom on a mission. She's determined to get her son Dexter back in the country.

“I do miss Dexter every day,” Smith said.  “I live in constant fear, not knowing when I will be able to speak to him or see him again or if he will even be returned."

Dexter, who turned four on Sept. 10, was the subject of a custody fight between Smith and her ex-boyfriend, Ali Salamey. Salamey was supposed to bring Dexter home as part of a child-sharing arrangement.

Instead, he took his son to Lebanon on August 24.

Salamey, who is a native born American citizen, violated a court order prohibiting him to leave the state.

“I don't even know how to describe it,” Smith said. “It's heartbreaking, but I have to force myself to get up every day and continue to fight and to navigate through this horrific event."

Her fight will soon head to Washington, D.C, where she is expected to meet with Florida Senators Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson for help with this international abduction.

Lebanon does not have an extradition treaty with the U.S. and is not part of the international agreement on child abductions.

Patrick Leduc, an attorney representing Smith, believes Salamey forged Smith’s signature on a passport application and has reached out to the State Department.

Smith leaves for Washington in two weeks.
