TAMPA, Fla. -- Every day is a beautiful day in the neighborhood for Haywood Roberts.

Every morning, rain or shine for over 30 years, you’ll find him, bright and early near his west Tampa home, picking up cans.

Lots of them. It's not bad for a guy who has been around the block awhile.

Roberts is 97 years old.

He has seen a lot of changes over the years. He remembers when seeing an automobile was a rarity.

"When I came here there was nothing but streetcars. You know, streetcars? One came right there and come back downtown. That has been years ago," he said.

His efforts help keep the neighborhood clean and looking good. It all began after he visited his doctor.

"Exercise. The doctor tells me exercise," Roberts said. "I pick up cans."

Roberts is a beloved man in this part of town. Friends and neighbors will stop by and sit awhile as he shares some humor and plenty of wisdom as well.

"They come and stop their car and sit on the porch and just listen to his stories," said his granddaughter, Marquetta Durham. "So it's a blessing to have him and to be able to have our granddad."
