TAMPA, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is expanding its reach by launching new social media pages entirely in Spanish.

  • Almost 30 percent of county's population Hispanic
  • Many of those claim Spanish as first language
  • Find new pages at @HCSOSheriffESP

The new social media pages went live during a ceremony at the bakery on Wednesday.

Hispanic business owners like La Segunda Bakery owner Tony Moré have seen the need for social media engagement targeting Spanish speakers.

“A lot of people we know, well, that I know, only speak Spanish,” Moré said.

Almost 30 percent of the population in Hillsborough County is Hispanic. Many of those claim Spanish as a first language.

The Sheriff's Office believes the new pages will be especially vital during emergencies like severe weather.

“How about putting that information out to help them protect themselves during a storm, help them protect their families?” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister.

“They’re going to be able to see stuff that they didn’t even know existed," Moré said. "it’s going to help everyone that speaks Spanish.”

The new Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages can be found under the handle @HCSOSheriffESP.
