LAKELAND, Fla. -- Lakeland's mayor isn't giving up on his plan to help the homeless population.

Mayor Bill Mutz has proposed a $195,000 per year program to help get people off the streets.

The mayor says he'll try again at Thursday night’s budget vote.

Those against the idea say there are better ways that money can be spent.

Mutz says the city has been repeatedly asked to address the homelessness issue, particularly when it comes to people congregating downtown.

“We’re going to see how it works and how the results are,” Mutz told commissioners, according to The Ledger.

“It’s not a desire to expand the government workforce, but it is a desire to accomplish what the city has asked us to do.”
