ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — It has been so hot lately so you may not have realized, but Autumn began Saturday evening.

  • Autumn began Saturday
  • No real cool down likely until October

We welcomed the end to summer with more days in the low 90s with mornings in the mid to upper 70s. These temperatures have been above average but only by a few degrees. Here in West Central Florida, we really don’t get a good cool down on average until October.

Some years, we have waited until November! On average the first good cold front of the season comes through in the first 2 weeks of October but the resulting cool down is short lived.

We really don’t get the serious cooler weather until at least November. That is when we start to see a great occurrence of cool comfortable mornings in the 50s.

It is the mornings and the late evenings where we can really notice the difference. Even with the cooler, drier air masses, we can still have some warm afternoons.

Here is a chart showing when the temperature falls below 60 and 55 for the first time. It will show the average occurrence, the earliest and latest occurrence on record.

Also, is a graph specifically for Tampa showing the temperature trend drops through the next couple of months.

I know it has been hot, but we are almost there. Hang in there cool weather lovers.
