TAMPA, Florida — A female okapi calf born just a few weeks ago has died, according to TampaZoo.

The zoo posted on Facebook that the female okapi (pronounced oh-COP-ee) had a condition similar to diabetes.

"While the calf reached milestones, such as standing on her own and nursing, she was less than six weeks old," the zoo said.

Nicknamed the "rainforest giraffe," okapis are the closest living relative of giraffes but do not grow that tall.

They have zebra-like black-and-white striped patterns on their legs.

The zoo said it's watching the calf's mother, Betty, and said "she is doing well."
