LAKELAND, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Halloween evening murder-suicide that left a Lakeland couple dead.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Antero Araujo Quintana, 40, shot and killed his wife Beatriz Araujo, 42, and then shot himself during an argument at their 10th Street West home Wednesday just before 6 p.m.

Deputies said Quintana died at the scene. Araujo was critically injured but she later died at Lakeland Regional Health Center.

A preliminary investigation indicated the couple's 21-year-old son witnessed the shootings. He said the couple had been arguing for several days and were preparing to take their children Trick-or-Treating when their last argument began.

The couple's two other children were waiting in the family truck during the argument and did not witness the shootings.

Deputies found Mrs. Araujo in the kitchen area with gunshot wounds in the abdomen and head. Araujo Quintana was nearby in the living room, deceased, with a gunshot wound in the head. The gun used was a .380-caliber handgun.

"It's absolutely heartbreaking that these children will have this awful memory of a day that should have been filled with good memories," said Polk Sheriff Grady Judd. "For the rest of us, it's a sad reminder of the human tragedy of domestic violence."
