PLANT CITY, Fla. — Four volunteers and a donor came out to help an elderly Plant City woman with storm damage.

  • Neighbors help elderly couple move barn off of car
  • Storm tossed barn onto couple's car
  • Elderly couple thankful for the help

Maryann Plattner and her husband live in the Turtle Creek neighborhood. A neighbor's barn land on her car after Friday's storm moved through the Bay area.

On Saturday, Spectrum Bay News 9's Stephanie Claytor shared her plea for help on the news.

"I just had major surgery, a shoulder replacement so I can't lift anything and he's had them strokes he can't walk," Plattner said on Saturday. "And his walker is in the trunk of the car. He fell this morning because he didn't have his walker to go to the bathroom. I can't get the walker out of there."

After the story aired, viewers called in and asked how they could help. A father and his two sons, all welders, came to her house to remove the barn. They wished to remain anonymous. A former Polk County Sheriff's Office Captain Rick Hohl also stopped by to help.

"I saw the story last night and I saw she was in distress and she needed some help," said Hohl. "That's what's it all about. I just came to help her."

About the same time the men arrived, a total stranger showed up to donate a walker.

"You need to help everyone it don't matter who they are or what their age is because God will come back to you in many ways," said Kathryn Hunzeker, who donated a walker. She said they had an extra one in her thrift store.

Plattner's husband had a big smile on his face as he tried out the new walker.

"I'm just so, so blessed," said Plattner.

About an hour later, the men were able to open the car and get her husband's old walker out of the trunk. Now the couple has one for the car and one for the house.

"They say something good comes out of bad and I was never a believer of that but I am now," Plattner told Hohl.

Now Plattner is trying to figure out how to get the rest of the barn and scraps hauled away.

She's hoping her insurance company will give her enough money to get another car.
