TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Police Department is receiving some extra money to help fund their traffic squad, allowing them to target aggressive drivers and crack down on violators.

The $100,000 from FDOT will be used to provide extra traffic patrols at Tampa's most dangerous intersections.

The top five dangerous intersections in Tampa are:

  • Bruce B. Downs Blvd. at E. Fowler Ave.
  • Himes Ave. at Hillsborough Ave.
  • Florida Ave. at Busch Blvd.
  • Dale Mabry Hwy. at Columbus Ave.
  • Courtney Campbell Causeway and Rocky Point Drive tied with Fowler Ave. at Central Avenue

More traffic officers will be out at those intersections citing drivers for aggressive driving, which is defined as "operating a vehicle without regard for others safety."

Police say having the extra funds for traffic enforcement is really helpful, but as a driver, they say you should be monitoring your own habits, too.

"Thing about your own driving too. It's really easy to go 10 miles an hour over the speed limit. It's really easy to go 20 miles an hour over the speed limit, so speed is what kills, speed is what hurts people out there. That, and distracted driving too. Distracted driving causes a lot of folks to drive aggressively out there," Tampa Police Officer Roy Paz said.

Tampa police also say if you see someone driving aggressively, you should call 911 to report it, or you can call 'Star FHP' on your cell phone to let dispatch know.
