NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — Residents in a New Port Richey neighborhood will be back out Monday morning cleaning up after a tornado blew through their community on Sunday.

  • Tornado damages home in New Port Richey
  • Neighbors came together to help with cleanup
  • Storm also downed trees and power lines

The tornado came through at about 9 a.m. in the area of Bolam Avenue and Atis Street, causing fallen trees and downed power lines.

The storm ripped off the roof of one house, which took the brunt of the storm. Although small in size, the storms caused a lot of damage in the area. According to estimates, winds reached between 90-100 mph during the brief tornado.

In addition to the damage and downed power lines, a small fire also broke out. There were no injuries reported.

"We’ve never expected and we don’t expect anything and yet they’ve been here," said Lisa Manaseri, of the neighborhood coming together Sunday afternoon to begin clean-up efforts. "The Red Cross - thank you - we did not expect them we thought they came in big disasters."

Manaseri, who had serious damage to her home's roof, said the Red Cross has offered assistance. An area landscaper also has offered assistance in clearing a fallen tree off her property.

Residents will have a better idea of what is left to clean up in the area today. Next up will be determining the cost of all the damage and then filing insurance claims.

Meanwhile, radar confirmed that a second tornado touched down in the Wiamauma area just before 11:30 a.m. Sunday. It caused minor tree and structure damage near Carlton Lake Road and Hwy 674.
