ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — No more plastic straws for St. Petersburg. 

  • City council votes to phase out plastic straws
  • Businesses will only give straws out by request; After that no plastic straws at all 
  • Also, City to consider plastic bag fee to help protect environment

The city council passed an ordinance Thursday night 5-2 banning single use plastic straws. The move also placed more restrictions on styrofoam use.

Styrofoam is no longer allowed on city property - including foam cups or take out containers. 

The ordinance gives businesses a year to transistion. 

Right now, those businesses will only give customers straws by request. 

The primary goal is to cut down on waste that is ending up in the Bay and Gulf. 

Also, city officials are considering a 5-cent fee for every single plastic bag taken from a store or restaurant carry out. 

While plastic bags have become a real part of our lives, some worry, their convenience is costing us too much in the environment.
