TAMPA, Fla. — A New Year's Eve shooting in Hillsborough County left one man dead and a suspect on the loose.

  • Deputies say man found shot inside vehicle
  • Shooting happened near busy Tampa intersection
  • Anyone with information asked to call Sheriff's Office

It happened Monday afternoon near the busy intersection of Fletcher and North Nebraska Avenue in Tampa.

Officials said a man approached a Florida Highway Patrol trooper who was stopped at the light and told him there was an injured man sitting in a car in a parking lot.

The victim was found. He had been shot multiple times and was taken to a local hospital but did not survive.

His name hasn't been released.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is canvassing businesses in the area, looking for any surveillance video that might have caught the crime on camera.

Deputies think the incident happened inside the car somewhere along the road, that the car was driven to the parking lot and that the shooter took off.

Authorities say it doesn't look like a random murder but they don't know how the people involved knew each other or a motive.

They say the person sought should be considered armed and dangerous. It's believed he fled east on Fletcher toward some car dealerships.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office.
