A road in Manatee County has residents so afraid to drive on it they consider it a game of Frogger just to leave their homes.

  • Resident John Frye was hit, killed in area two years ago

Hundreds of residents have already signed a petition for a street light.

But the Florida Department of Transportation says that is not what they will get.

With cars flying by at 60 mph, residents at Greyhawk Landing are used to being a little on edge when driving out of their neighborhood onto State Road 64.

"I think everyone is very nervous when they come out of here," said Richard Lilley.

"My next door neighbor, a guy named John Frye, used to go out in the morning and walk to Publix and get a newspaper," Lilley said. "He was stuck by a car and killed near the entrance of Greyhawk Landing."

That was more than two years ago.

Since then, FDOT has visited the area and done studies. Its final recommendation: Roundabouts.

"The possibility of a little roundabout, which I understand may be put in here, is in Congress," Lilley said. "It's not going to work."

Spectrum Bay News 9 obtained the study done by FDOT.

The agency cites there is not enough volume of traffic necessary for a light but did note 12 accidents there in 2017. That was the same number of accidents in 2013, 2014 and 2015 combined.

"It's really terrifying," Lilley said.

"It's no longer a question of if there's going to be more traffic in this area, but when as new developments continue to pop up on every corner."

FDOT says drivers won’t be seeing the roundabout for a few years.

Instead, an interim plan will be announced within the next week or so.

"We'd like to see what they're recommending before it’s all baked in concrete,” Lilley said.

FDOT says it is following federal guidelines. The signal requirements that must be met in order to get a new traffic signal come from a federal highway administration guidebook.
