Tampa police are investigating a shooting at a gas station early Friday morning.

  • Robbery suspect shot by clerk at Tampa gas station
  • Shooting occurred around 2 a.m. at a Sunoco gas station
  • Suspect shot in leg, pelvis expected to survive

Police said a robbery suspect was shot at the Sunoco gas station at E. Hillsborough Avenue and 34th Street.

They said when the man attempted to rob the gas station at gunpoint, the clerk was prepared and had a firearm of his own.

Police received the 911 call just after 2 a.m. They said when the suspect attempted to rob the clerk inside the Sunoco, a struggle ensued and the two men ended up outside in front of the pumps.

The clerk fired off multiple rounds and struck the suspect in the leg and pelvis.

Police said the suspect tried to get away and ran across Hillsborough Avenue, eventually collapsing in the parking lot of another convenience store across the street. That's where police found the clerk and suspect.

They said the clerk chased him across the street and held him at gunpoint until police arrived.

The suspect was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive.

Police say they don't anticipate any charges to be filed against the clerk.
