Recently, I reached out to the followers of my Facebook page asking about what topics they would like to see.

I was suprised to see that there were a few that wanted to know more about when the low temperature occurs. After some digging, I realized that the curiosity has become more piqued due to more availability and reliance on weather apps for daily weather information.

Well, simply put, the daily low usually occurs in the morning, right around sunrise. Confusion happens because many forecasts refer to the low as "tonight's" low temperature. More appropriate would be to say the "overnight low," or even better, the "morning low."

The reason the lowest temperature occurs first thing in the morning is because that is the time of day following the longest period of time without sunshine heating the air and ground. So, as the sun rises, just before it has a chance to begin warming things up, the temperature will bottom out.

So, if you are using an app for your weather forecast, be aware that when you see "tonight's low" it is really telling you the forecast for "tomorrow morning."

On the Spectrum Bay News 9 app, you will see a daily high temperature on the 7 day forecast, followed by a forecast low. That low is the overnight low or the next morning's low.

Now, sometimes forecasting the low traditionally can be a challenge if a cold front is moving through during the middle of the day for example. On those types of days, the morning may be warm and then the temperatures drop during the late afternoon to values lower that what was experienced in the morning. That is not that common around here. But, it did occur a few times this Winter.

Now, going foward for the next few months, we won't get much variability in our temperature and with cold fronts very uncommon after this month, you can expect the lows to occur just about every day, first thing in the morning.
