CLEARWATER, Fla. — City police on Wednesday released more details, including video, related to a December 26 officer-involved shooting in which a man was killed.

Police Chief Dan Slaughter, citing the State Attorney, said the shooting was a "justifiable homicide."

The incident, which started as a welfare check, happened at an apartment on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard.

Police said Wayne Falana Jr., 35, fired shots at them, with one officer suffering minor injuries.

Police were there to check on Annie Vann, 33. After a brief conversation between her and officers, Falana opened fire from behind her.

Video showed smoke also near the officers, which Slaughter came from a fire extinguiser that Falana hit.

Slaughter said Falana had access to three guns. Falana was shot 16 times, Slaughter said.

Four officers returned fire, Slaughter said.

"I can't think of too many shootings we've had in Clearwater that involved the exchange of multiple rounds like this."

The injured officer, identified as Thomas Dawe, had a bullet strike his boot. He was treated at the scene.

Slaughter said Falana had a lengthy criminal history.
