FLORIDA — Governor Ron DeSantis's recently announced executive order affecting school safety procedures will have an effect on how the Florida Department of Law Enforcement tracks Risk Protection Orders statewide, according to the agency.

Key facts:

  • Risk Protection Orders (RPOs) come from a provision in the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Act
  • RPOs allow law enforcement to temporarily seize weapons from citizens deemed to be a threat for mental health reasons
  • Currently, tracking RPOs is not easy due to the fact that every county in Florida has a different system
  • DeSantis's executive order mandates a change that will standardize RPO tracking
