CLEARWATER, Fla. — The girlfriend of Markeis McGlockton, Britany Jacobs, is speaking out for the first time since she gave birth to their son one month ago.

RELATED STORIES

Jacobs said she had no idea she was pregnant when McGlockton was shot and killed by Michael Drejka on July 19, 2018.

She said McGlockton was there for the births of their three other children — Markeis, Jr., 5, Marley 3, Marshawn, 11 months and Martavious, 1 month — so it was tough giving birth to their new baby on her own.

It was even harder knowing her son will never know his father.

When asked how McGlockton would’ve reacted to the new baby, she said he would’ve been happy. She said they had a list of baby names when they had their last baby a few months before McGlockton’s death, so she chose one of those names for the newborn.

“He was affectionate, liked to play games, liked to play with them, he loved Chucky Cheese. He played the games more than the kids did. He was a big kid,” she said.

"They keep me going"

McGlockton's death was initially ruled a "stand-your-ground" case by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. Accused shooter Drejka and his lawyers argue he fired in self-defense.

Jacobs said her children are the reason she’s able to push past the pain of losing their father.

“They remind me of him in different ways, each one," she said. "They keep me going.”

Jacobs said her children were there and witnessed their father's death. She said it has impacted everyone.

“My son [Markeis Jr.], he’s been taking it hard. Like in school, acting out, so it kind of destroyed him,” Jacobs said.

She said her children are going to counseling and she’s doing the best she can.
